On May 26th Prof Dirk Inze of the University of Ghent (Belgium) and Scientific Director of the Flemish Institute for Biotechnology was awarded to become foreign member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Prof. Inze gives a lectute "Global challenges to plant biotechnology and genomics" at the Aula of Biological Faculty of Sofia University at 14:00, 26.05.2010.


Prof. Inze has developed numerous fruitful collaborations with Bulgarian scientists , in particular with the Agrobio Institute headed by Prof Rositza Batchvarova  and the Joint Genomic Center, headed by Prof. Maria Shishiniova  and Academician  Prof Atanas Atannassov, both located at Sofia. In his inaugural lecture Prof. Inze highlighted the importance of Plant Biotechnology and Genomics for improving crop productivity in order to feed the exponentially growing world population and for providing sustainable, CO2 neutral bio-energy supplies. The award given to Prof Inze will further strengthen the scientific cooperation between Belgian and Bulgarian scientist in the field of plant biotechnology. Both parties signed a memorandum of understanding.
